Surgery or Surgical Procedure

What it means, and what it does to a claim.

A manual or operative procedure to treat illness or injury, correct a defect, diagnose disease or relieve suffering. It has to be performed in a hospital or day-care centre by a registered practitioner.

Why it matters

The place and the practitioner are part of the definition, not incidental to it. A procedure done in a consulting room rather than a qualifying hospital or day-care centre can fall outside cover even though the surgery itself was necessary and competently done.
