How we score insurance plans
Every score on this site resolves to the arithmetic on this page.
Plans are scored out of 5 on three weighted components: plan features 45%, insurer strength 45% and premium 10%. Insurer inputs come from IRDAI's Annual Report and public grievance disclosures, fy 2024–26 (3-year average). Plan inputs come from the insurer's own policy wording. No insurer pays to be listed, ranked or scored.
What goes into a plan score
| Component | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Plan features | 45% | Cover structure, restoration, riders, waiting periods, payout flexibility |
| Insurer strength | 45% | Claim settlement ratio, complaint volume, solvency, scale of business |
| Premium | 10% | Cost across standard age and family profiles |
Features and insurer strength are weighted equally and deliberately. A generous plan from an insurer that argues over claims is not a good outcome, and neither is a reliable insurer's thin product. Premium carries only 10% — price matters, but the cheapest policy that does not pay is the most expensive thing on this page.
What goes into an insurer score
Insurers are scored separately from plans, and the weights differ by category because the thing that goes wrong differs. A term claim is one large binary payout years after the policy was sold; a health claim is a stream of smaller ones with a hospital waiting.
| Component | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Insurer strength | 60% | Claim settlement, complaints, financial scale |
| Protective features | 30% | Critical illness, waiver of premium, payout options |
| Premium affordability | 10% | Cost across standard profiles |
| Component | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Gross written premium | 25% | Scale of the health book |
| Claim settlement ratio | 22% | 3-year average |
| Hospital network | 17% | Cashless reach |
| Complaint volume | 15% | Grievances per 10,000 claims |
| TPA model | 10% | In-house claims desk vs outsourced |
| Online servicing | 10% | Digital claims and policy management |
Where the numbers come from
- Claim settlement & complaints
- IRDAI Annual Report
- Averaging period
- FY 2024–26 (3-year average)
- Cover, exclusions, waiting periods
- Insurer policy wording
- Last verified
- August 2026
Every plan page lists the specific documents its figures came from, with the clause where a number is contested, and its own last-verified date. Where we could not verify a figure against a primary source, the plan is not published.
How we stay independent
- Insurers cannot pay for inclusion, for a higher score, or to remove a weakness.
- Every plan page names what the plan does not cover, and what we do not like about it. A plan with no listed weaknesses has not been reviewed properly.
- Myinsurancebro is an IRDAI-licensed advisor and earns commission on policies placed through us. That is disclosed rather than hidden — and it is why the scores are computed from published data instead of from judgement we would have an interest in.
- Premiums are illustrations for stated profiles. We do not present them as quotes.
What a score does not tell you
A score ranks plans against each other on the evidence available. It cannot know your health history, your dependants, your city's hospital costs or which exclusion will matter to you in ten years. Use it to shortlist, then read the policy wording — and talk to an advisor before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
Are Myinsurancebro scores paid for or influenced by insurers?
No. Scores are calculated from the published data described on this page. Insurers cannot pay to raise a score, to be included, or to have a weakness removed.
Where do the claim settlement ratios come from?
From IRDAI's Annual Report and public grievance disclosures, as fy 2024–26 (3-year average). A single year moves too much on small claim volumes to be a fair signal, which is why we average three.
Are the premiums on this site quotes?
No. Every premium shown is an illustration for a named profile — a stated age, cover amount and city. Your own premium depends on your age, health, habits and underwriting, and only the insurer can quote it.
How often are the figures updated?
Each plan record carries its own last-verified date, shown on the plan page. The current dataset was verified in August 2026 against IRDAI disclosures and insurer policy wordings.
Disclaimer: Figures shown here are compiled from IRDAI annual reports and public grievance disclosures, and from insurer public disclosures and policy wordings. Claim settlement ratios and complaint volumes are three-year averages for FY 2024–26. Premiums are indicative illustrations for the stated profile, not quotes — your actual premium depends on your age, health, city, habits and underwriting. Scores are Myinsurancebro's own assessment.
