Hospital
What it means, and what it does to a claim.
An institution registered with the local authorities as a hospital. Where it is not registered, it must meet minimum standards on beds, round-the-clock qualified nursing, an operation theatre and daily patient records.
Why it matters
A claim can fail on where you were treated rather than what was wrong with you. Small nursing homes and day clinics sometimes do not meet the bed or staffing minimums, and treatment there falls outside the policy even when it was medically correct. If a facility is not in the insurer network, it is worth checking it qualifies before a planned admission.
