Specific Waiting Period
What it means, and what it does to a claim.
A separate waiting period attached to a named list of conditions and procedures. Cataract, hernia and joint replacement are the usual entries, and it applies whether or not you had the condition before.
Why it matters
People are caught out by this because it applies even to conditions that developed after the policy began. The list is in the policy wording, not the brochure, and it varies between insurers more than the headline waiting period does. If you are buying with a planned procedure in mind, this is the clause to read first.
The legal definition
Specific Waiting Period means a period up to 36 months from the commencement of a health insurance policy during which period specified diseases/treatments (except due to an accident) are not covered. On completion of the period, diseases /treatments shall be covered provided the policy has been continuously without any break.
Quoted verbatim from an IRDAI-filed policy wording. Definitions are standardised across insurers, but the limits attached to them are not โ always read your own policy schedule.
