Second Medical Opinion for Major Illness

What it means, and what it does to a claim.

An independent practitioner reviewing your treating doctor recommendation, at your request. It is an opinion, not a replacement for your doctor care.

Why it matters

It is a free benefit on most policies and it goes almost entirely unused. For a major diagnosis where the proposed treatment is invasive, expensive or irreversible, a second opinion at the insurer cost is straightforwardly worth taking. It does not affect your claim โ€” the insurer would rather fund the opinion than the wrong surgery.
