Room Rent
What it means, and what it does to a claim.
What the hospital charges per day for your room and board. Many policies cap it, either as a rupee amount or as a percentage of your sum insured.
Why it matters
A room-rent cap does not just limit the room bill. In most Indian hospitals the whole tariff scales with room category, so choosing a room above your limit can proportionately cut what the insurer pays on the surgeon, the anaesthetist and the ICU too. A capped policy can therefore pay far less than you expected on a claim you thought was fully covered. 'No room-rent limit' is worth more than it sounds.
The legal definition
Room Rent means the amount charged by a Hospital towards Room and Boarding expenses and shall include the associated medical expenses.
Quoted verbatim from an IRDAI-filed policy wording. Definitions are standardised across insurers, but the limits attached to them are not — always read your own policy schedule.
