Illness
What it means, and what it does to a claim.
A sickness, disease or condition that impairs normal function and needs treatment. It is split into acute conditions that resolve with treatment and chronic ones that persist.
Why it matters
The acute-versus-chronic split does real work. Chronic conditions are the ones that attract waiting periods, exclusions and loadings, and a condition you consider managed rather than ongoing may still be chronic in the insurer terms. It is also why a pre-existing condition has to be declared even when it currently causes you no trouble.
The legal definition
