Migration
What it means, and what it does to a claim.
Moving to a different policy with the same insurer while keeping the waiting-period credit you have already built up. A group plan to an individual one, or an old product to a current one.
Why it matters
This is the route out of employer group cover when you leave a job. Done at the right moment, the years you spent covered under the group policy still count. Done late, they do not, and you start over as a new customer in your forties instead of your twenties.
The legal definition
Migration means a facility provided to policyholders (including all members under family cover and group policies), to transfer the credits gained for pre-existing diseases and specific waiting periods from one health insurance policy to another with the same insurer.
Quoted verbatim from an IRDAI-filed policy wording. Definitions are standardised across insurers, but the limits attached to them are not — always read your own policy schedule.
